Ano ba talaga ang self-confidence? Ito ay when you believe and trust in your own abilities at alam mong makakaya mong i-handle at mag-move forward even after a failure. Nagkakaroon ng healthy self-confidence ang mga bata when they learn and grow from these moments.
It is also a skill parents can teach to their kids, and could be the secret to them becoming champions in life:
Tip 1: Be honest, believe in them, and celebrate their effort more than the outcome
“I avoided ‘sugar-coating’ and told him upfront that he needed to step up,” the mom said.
She explains: “I balanced this out by saying that if he cannot keep up, it’s okay. The important thing is to do his best at anything. By doing his best, regardless of the outcome, I'd be very proud of him.”
Dahil naging aware ang bata na he needed improvement, naging mas determined siya to practice and master the sport.
Tip 2: Keep encouraging them, and be present and supportive when they try new things
“I told him to stay focused on what the coach was saying and to practice more. A reward system works as well,” she said.
Isa pang tip mula kay Nancy? Be present! Every time may training si Cleo, minake sure ni Nancy na siya ay present to support and encourage him. “He gets happy whenever he sees us supporting him in every training. He becomes more active and attentive when his coach is teaching,” she explained.
Tip 3: Validate their feelings when they face failure and teach them to learn from it
“I hugged him, then I told him na in sports, you will not always be the champion. Sometimes, you will lose, but that’s not a reason to give up,” ang kuwento ni Diane. “It’s okay to be sad and cry when you lose. But, you must stand up again to reach your goal. Use failure as inspiration.”
Thanks to his mom’s words, ipinagpatuloy ng bata ang pagsali sa competitions. Kaya, napaka-proud ni Diane nang sa second tournament ni Zenriq, he won not just one but two medals!
Mommies at daddies, remember that your kids will face self-doubt one of these days. Napaka-importante na you are there to teach them how to overcome it. This builds their self-confidence and brings them one step closer to becoming champions in life!
